Shito-Ryu

The Venerable Kenwa Mabuni (1889-1952), who studied karate under Venerable Yasutsune Itosu (1838-1915) and the Venerable Higaonna, founded the Shito-ryu style of karate. Because he studied under Itosu, one of Funakoshi's instructors, Shito-ryu and Shoto-kan have many similar characteristics; both styles use many of the same Kata, but each with different understandings of the applications of techniques therein. They are also related to Goju-ryu since the founder of that style aslo studies with Higaonna. Currently, Shito-ryu is divided into various groups, such as Hayashi-ha, Tani-ha, Sakagami-ha, and others.
