Goju-Ryu

Mr. Ohtsuka

The Venerable Choju Miyagi (1888-1953) studied karate under Higaonna. Mr. Miyagi's followers are called Goju-ryu stylists. Goju-ryu is broadly divided into Okinawan Goju-ryu and Japanese Goju-kai. Goju-ryu differs markedly from the other three most popular styles of Karate. Goju-ryu emphasizes breathing and strong stance, strong punches and in-close fighting. Blocking is circular or elliptical, and movement is often lateral. Shifting tends not to be as emphasized as it is in Shoto-kan.
